Summary: VEGF in ovarian cancer

Ovarian carcinomas are richly vascularised and highly dependent on VEGF-mediated angiogenesis.2,3 Numerous studies have shown an association between VEGF overexpression and ovarian cancer development, highlighting the critical role of VEGF in this disease.2,6,8,10,14

Further research is warranted to elucidate the relationship between VEGF and ovarian cancer tumourigenesis, with the hope of improving diagnosis and treatment. Because angiogenesis is integral to the functional ovulatory cycle, additional research may also yield insight into the physiology of other angiogenic-dependent cancers that develop in normally quiescent tissue.2
